When to call a handyman vs. a specialist
A handyman is the right call for the long list of small, mostly-cosmetic jobs that aren't worth scheduling a licensed trade for: hanging a TV, patching drywall, swapping a doorknob, re-caulking a tub, fixing a sticky cabinet, replacing a screen, mounting a curtain rod. A good handyman in Puerto Rico will also handle things that are technically electrical or plumbing but stay on the customer side of the equipment β replacing a ceiling fan on existing wiring, swapping a sink faucet, replacing a toilet flapper, hooking up a new washer.
Where you should call a licensed specialist instead: anything inside the panel, anything that opens a wall to run new wire or pipe, gas work, water heaters that need a real swap, and roof work above the soffit. The rule of thumb most experienced Taskers use is "I'll work on what's bolted to the wall, not what's behind it." If a job needs a permit or an inspection, it's not a handyman job.
What handyman jobs actually look like in PR homes
Puerto Rico's climate, construction, and storm cycle generate a pretty specific set of recurring jobs:
- Humidity damage. Swollen interior doors that won't latch, sticking cabinet drawers, rusted hinges and door strikes, mildew in bathrooms, paint peeling around AC sleeves. Most of these are easy fixes once you know the cause.
- Screen and screen-door repairs. Mosquito screens and patio-door screens go through hell here β sun, salt, and dogs. Re-screening a window panel is a 20β30 minute job; replacing a screen door is 1β2 hours.
- Hurricane shutter tune-ups. Accordion shutters that don't slide, panel shutters with seized wing nuts, missing or stripped anchor bolts. Best handled in May or early June, before the season β not the day before a storm.
- Concrete and stucco patches. Hairline cracks around window openings and at the corners of CMU walls. These move with the building and need flexible patching compound, not regular spackle.
- AC bracket and condensate-line work. Securing a wobbly wall-mount sleeve, clearing a clogged condensate line that's dripping inside, replacing a missing condensate pan.
- Generator and inverter prep. Mounting a transfer switch box on the wall, running a cord port through to the outside, securing a portable generator pad. Anything involving actual wiring inside the panel needs an electrician.
- Door and lock adjustments. Realigning a strike plate, planing a swollen door bottom, replacing a deadbolt β common after a few years of humidity cycling.
If you've been putting off a list of these, batching them into one visit is almost always cheaper per task than scheduling them one at a time.
Estimating a job before you book
Three things drive the price: time, materials, and complexity (a stand-in for "how likely is this to take twice as long as it looks"). When you describe the job, give the Tasker enough to estimate all three.
A good description includes:
- What the item is and where it's mounted. "TV mount on a concrete block wall" is a totally different job from "TV mount on drywall over wood studs." Concrete and CMU need masonry bits and anchors and take longer.
- Photos that show the surroundings, not just the broken thing. The Tasker needs to see what's around it β outlets, pipes, trim, access.
- Anything that's not standard. High ceilings, a second-floor balcony with no easy access, a unit on the seventh floor with a small elevator, a tile floor that can't be drilled.
A typical small task in PR runs 30 minutes to 2 hours. A 3β4 hour visit usually covers a handful of bundled jobs. Anything past a full day starts to look more like a specialist project.
Hourly vs. fixed-price
Both pricing models are common. Each makes sense in different situations.
Hourly works best when the scope is fuzzy or the list of tasks is long and varied. You pay for what you use, and the Tasker doesn't have to pad for uncertainty. Typical hourly rates on PR range from $35β$60 depending on experience and the kind of work. A 1-hour minimum is standard.
Fixed price is better when the job is well-defined β a TV mount, a ceiling fan swap, a specific list of three items. You know the number going in, and the Tasker absorbs the risk if something takes longer than expected. Expect a small premium over the equivalent hourly cost in exchange for that certainty.
For most multi-task visits, the practical answer is a fixed quote with a written scope: "these eight items, $X total, materials extra." That keeps both sides honest.
Comparing quotes and reading a scope
When you get two or three quotes for the same list, the price differences usually trace back to one of these:
- Materials in or out. A $120 quote with materials included can be cheaper than a $90 quote where the Tasker hands you a $50 receipt at the end.
- Trip and minimum fees. Some Taskers charge a one-hour minimum even for a 20-minute job; others don't. For a single small task, this can dominate the price.
- Disposal. Hauling old fixtures or packaging is sometimes included, sometimes a separate $20β$40 line.
- Warranty on the work. Higher-priced Taskers more often guarantee the job for 30β90 days. Worth asking about.
A clean written scope ("install [X], patch [Y], caulk [Z], two hours estimated, materials included up to $40") is a better signal than a low bid with no detail.
Common pitfalls
A few things go wrong on handyman jobs more often than they should:
- Mid-job scope creep. "Since you're here, could you alsoβ¦" β fine occasionally, but a new item is a new job and should get a new price. Don't be surprised when the visit runs over.
- Missing parts. Especially with online furniture, fixtures, or hardware that shipped from the mainland. Open the boxes and check the parts list before the Tasker arrives. Missing screws can stall the whole visit.
- Wrong anchors. Drywall anchors don't work in concrete; concrete anchors split drywall. If you're not sure what the wall is, take a photo and ask.
- No second wall check. Before drilling, the Tasker should know what's on the other side β a water line, a closet, a built-in. Five seconds of looking saves a much larger repair.
- Paying before the work is checked. Walk through every task with the Tasker before payment. It's the moment to catch a screw left out or a caulk line that needs another pass.
The best handyman visits feel almost boring β a list of items, each crossed off, no surprises. That's the bar.
